I taught them that

- from Tarnah, QLD, exchange year in Italy

Coming to Italy was the most horrifying thing I have ever done in my hole entire life. Before I left the only words of confidence my friends said to me were "wow your so brave, I mean your going to live in a country that doesn’t speak your language with people you don’t even know and you won’t have your friends or family. God I could never do that.’ Thanks guys.

When I finally arrived at the Rome airport all I could think were these things and I was absolutely petrified of what lie ahead of me but at the same time exhausted from the 30 hour plane trip to reach my new country for the next year. At the airport we all split up because our flights all left at different times and I went with Ellie and Irene to the Domestic airport. As we walked out the doors of the International Airport my bag got really heavy and I tried to adjust it and I fell over my other bag. It was so embarrassing my first impression on my new country was my ass up in the air. But it didn’t matter. Nobody there knew me. And I was not the first exchange student to fall over in Italy!!!

Coming on exchange isn’t as petrifying as it may first seem. All host families are nice. Now lets face it, how could someone that isn’t caring offer you their home for 6 months or a year?

Speaking a new language is the most amazing feeling ever. You don’t just pick it up over night. I have been here over six months and I still don’t speak perfect, but it is fun. You mime things to your host family and you get to teach them your language as well and when you hear them speak English you can say, "I taught them that".
